The secrets of Chester’s clock

Chester’s Eastgate Clock is one of the most recognisable features of Chester and easily one of the most photographed. As such, it’s become a symbol of heritage and civic pride. Its story spans further than its commemorative origins and architectural craftsmanship though, as it boasts a few surprising legends. So what are the secrets of Chester’s clock? And why should you visit?

A commemorative beginning

The Eastgate Clock occupies a site of profound historical significance. It stands above Eastgate, which itself marks the location of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix. The decision to construct the clock was made in the late 19th century as a way to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

The design was created by architect John Douglas, a figure renowned for his distinctive contributions to Victorian architecture. Rather than opting for heavy stonework, Douglas envisioned a lightweight wrought-iron structure. This approach preserved light and openness in the busy street below. The clock mechanism was crafted by J.B. Joyce & Co. of Whitchurch, one of the oldest clockmakers in the world. The installation was completed in 1897, and the clock was officially unveiled in 1899 on the occasion of Queen Victoria’s 80th birthday.

Design and craftsmanship

The Eastgate Clock is remarkable not only for its historical context but also for its intricate design. The structure consists of four clock faces set within an open iron pavilion supported by decorated pylons. Above these sits a copper ogee dome, crowned with a gilded weather vane featuring a lion motif, which is an enduring emblem of British heraldry. Each face carries a specific inscription:

  • The eastern side commemorates the 60th year of Queen Victoria’s reign.
  • The western side acknowledges the civic officials serving during 1897 and 1898.
  • The southern face pays tribute to Edward Evans-Lloyd, a prominent local figure who championed the project.
  • The northern face notes that the clock was funded by public subscription, reflecting community involvement in its creation.

Over the years, the clock has undergone careful restoration. In 1988, its faces were glazed to prevent damage following an incident in which its hands were stolen. Later, in 1992, the mechanism was electrified to eliminate the need for manual winding, and in 1996 the clock’s original colours were restored.

What is the cultural significance of the Eastgate Clock?

Today, the Eastgate Clock is regarded as one of the most photographed clocks in England, second only to Big Ben. Its elevated position on the ancient city walls makes it a focal point for visitors and residents alike. Tourists frequently pause to admire its detailing or capture the panoramic views from the walkway that runs beneath it.

Beyond its architectural appeal, the clock has become woven into the cultural fabric of Chester. It is a familiar meeting point, a backdrop for countless photographs, and a site that locals regard with great pride.

So what are the secrets of Chester’s clock?

With such prominence, it is unsurprising that the Eastgate Clock has attracted its share of stories, secrets and myths.  So what are the secrets of Chester’s clock? Well, there are plenty.

The Eastgate Clock has only three dials, leaving the west face blank. Local lore claims this omission was deliberate, so the clock “turns its back” on Wales, reflecting old Anglo-Welsh rivalries. Though likely apocryphal, the tale persists, giving the clock a playful, political twist in Chester’s historic narrative.

Of course, there’s also a ghost story. Among Chester’s ghostly legends, Sarah’s story lingers beneath the Eastgate Clock. She was a young chambermaid, hopelessly in love with a soldier stationed at the gate. Their secret meetings ended tragically when Sarah, hurrying to see him, was struck by a speeding carriage near Eastgate and killed instantly. Grief overshadowed their romance, and the soldier soon left, heartbroken. Locals whisper that on still, moonlit nights, Sarah’s spirit returns, pacing beneath the arches, searching for her lost love. Some claim to hear faint footsteps or catch a fleeting silhouette in Victorian dress, keeping her memory entwined with Chester’s most iconic landmark.
