Autumn Walks Near Chester

Visiting the Chester Cathedral in autumn

If you’re looking for autumn walks near Chester, you’ll find plenty of beautiful places to enjoy as the leaves begin to change. From woodland trails and country estates to riverside paths and historic landscapes, the area around Chester is particularly appealing during the autumn months.

Walk Through Delamere Forest

For classic autumn scenery, Delamere Forest is a great choice.

Located around 15 to 25 minutes from Chester depending on your starting point, Delamere is the largest wooded area in Cheshire, with a mixture of deciduous and evergreen trees, walking trails and views across the surrounding countryside.

Autumn is an especially good time to visit. Forestry England specifically recommends the Blakemere Trail for autumn colour, with beech, oak, sweet chestnut and birch trees providing a changing display throughout the season.

You can also make your walk longer by exploring towards Old Pale, where you’ll find wider views beyond the woodland.

Explore the Sandstone Trail

If you want something more substantial, consider walking part of the Sandstone Trail.

The full trail runs for around 34 miles from Frodsham to Whitchurch, but you don’t need to tackle the whole route. Individual sections can make excellent half-day walks, particularly around Delamere Forest, Beeston and the Peckforton Hills.

Autumn brings a mixture of woodland, open countryside and changing views, making this a good option when you want more variety than a traditional forest walk.

The section around Beeston Castle is particularly scenic, combining countryside views with the dramatic sandstone ridge.

Take a Walk Around Beeston Castle

For a walk with a little history included, head towards Beeston Castle.

The castle stands on a rocky crag overlooking the Cheshire Plain, giving you impressive views across the surrounding countryside. There are two walks within the castle grounds, including a route to the summit and another around the base of the crag.

In autumn, the surrounding woodland and countryside take on warmer colours, while the elevated position means you can enjoy much wider views than you would from a woodland trail.

It’s also a good option if you’re planning a full day out, as you can combine the walk with exploring the castle itself.

Enjoy the Chester City Walls

You don’t need to leave Chester to enjoy an autumn walk.

The city walls provide a roughly two-mile elevated circuit around the historic centre, passing Roman remains, medieval gateways, the River Dee and Chester Racecourse.

The autumn atmosphere gives the route a different character, particularly when you look towards the River Dee and surrounding parks.

It’s also one of the easiest walks to combine with lunch or coffee, making it a practical choice if you’re spending a day in Chester rather than heading into the countryside.

Walk Through Grosvenor Park

For a shorter autumn stroll, Grosvenor Park is another option close to the city centre.

The Grade II-listed park sits beside the River Dee and provides a peaceful green space within walking distance of Chester’s main attractions.

You can combine a walk through the park with the city walls or continue towards the riverside and Handbridge.

This works particularly well if you’re looking for a gentle walk rather than a full countryside hike.

Discover the Countess of Chester Country Park

If you’d prefer somewhere quieter, the Countess of Chester Country Park provides another option close to the city.

The park offers open areas, ponds and walking routes, with plenty of opportunities to see seasonal changes in the landscape.

It’s particularly useful if you want somewhere close to Chester where you can enjoy some fresh air without committing to a long drive.

You can also combine it with a visit to other parts of north Chester if you’re making a full day of exploring the area.

Explore Tatton Park

If you’re happy to travel a little further, Tatton Park near Knutsford is worth considering for an autumn day out.

The estate has around 1,000 acres of deer park alongside woodland, meres and historic landscapes. There are several walking routes, including the three-mile Field to Fork trail and the Beech Avenue Conservation Trail.

The Beech Avenue is particularly interesting in autumn. The avenue was originally planted in 1739, and many of the trees have now reached an ancient stage, making it an atmospheric place to walk as the leaves begin to change.

Allow plenty of time if you visit Tatton, as there is enough to explore beyond the walking trails.

Make the Most of an Autumn Day Near Chester

One of the advantages of walking around Chester in autumn is the variety of landscapes available within a relatively small area.

For woodland and autumn colour, head to Delamere Forest. For historic scenery and panoramic views, consider Beeston Castle or the Sandstone Trail. If you want to stay close to the city, Chester’s walls, Grosvenor Park and the River Dee provide easy alternatives.

For a longer day out, Tatton Park gives you the opportunity to combine woodland, parkland, wildlife and historic buildings.
